National Coffee Day

Coffee

September 29 is National Coffee Day.  Some restaurants and coffee shops are celebrating with FREE coffee.  I never became a coffee drinker, but I know those who are.  They have to have their daily cup(s). Is coffee bad for you, or does it provide some health benefits? According to the Mayo Clinic, "the best answer may be that for most people the health benefits outweigh the risks.  Recent studies have generally found no connection between coffee and an increased risk … [Read more...]

Do you Suffer from Multiple Chemical Sensitivities?

Environmental Factors

Is Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) real?  Yes, I can definitely attest to it.  And if you are suffering from this awful illness, I can sympathize with you.  I had never heard of such a thing before.  I, along with everyone else in the world is exposed to chemicals.  I never knew someone who suffered from the effects of over exposure to chemicals.  However, starting a couple of years ago, I began developing symptoms that I couldn't explain.  Symptoms … [Read more...]

Gluten-Free at Subway

Brownies

After a 3 year development phase, Subway has been testing gluten free rolls and brownies in various markets since January 2011.  As someone with a wheat allergy, I have been excited about the possibility of eating at Subway again. The gluten-free tests have been slow and meticulous.  Due to cross contamination issues, Subway wants to make sure they get it right.  Subway has spent much time training their employees with instructions, presentations, demonstrations and monthly … [Read more...]

Cantaloupe Recall

Contaminated Cantaloupes

Yet again, another food recall.  Cantaloupes have been in the news during the past couple of weeks regarding the FDA's finding of Listeria monocytogenes in samples of Jensen Farms’ Rocky Ford-brand cantaloupe.  The samples were taken from a Denver-area store and from equipment and cantaloupe at the Jensen Farms’ packing facility. Contaminated Cantaloupes To date, people within 10 states have been infected from this outbreak.  Listeria is a foodborne … [Read more...]

Strange Health Symptoms

My current health issues began in 2007.  In looking back, I know there were a lot of little things that should have caught my attention.  But I was just going through each day masking any pain or symptoms I might have had – not wanting to stop and take the time to figure out what might be causing it.  I thought I’m not that bad.  My issues were just minor.  One minor symptom I had during that time was while I was working part time in an office.  … [Read more...]

Migraines and Their Triggers

migraine

A few years ago, I started having episodes that I called "blurred vision".  No pain was associated with these episodes.  They would last for a little while.  I remember the first one happening when I attended a friend's SuperBowl party.  All of the sudden while I was sitting on the couch watching the game and enjoying time with friends, one of these episodes came on.  I didn't think much of it at the time. The episodes continued happening a few times … [Read more...]

Have You Heard of BPA?

Canned Food

BPA stands for Bisphenol A.  Fortunately, BPA is becoming more readily known, especially when it comes to baby bottles.  BPA is used in plastics and found in the epoxy lining in metal food cans.  It is effective with preventing food to spoil in the cans.  However, since BPA is lipophilic (fat-seeking), it can leach into canned foods.  Once BPA is in food, it quickly moves into people as they eat the food.  Enough exposure to BPA can cause numerous health … [Read more...]

The Timeline of Stress

The year I got married was rather stressful.  My now husband proposed on New Years Eve.  I didn’t want a long drawn out engagement, so I began planning a wedding for June.  January:  My soon-to-be husband bought a franchise and began his business.  This required a week of training in Toronto in which I also attended.  During the trip on one cold, rainy dark night, the tire blew on his car.  I remember standing out in the cold as he tried to jack up … [Read more...]

Throwing Out My Back While Living with Poison

In my mid 20s, on election day in November, I woke up, took a shower and began to get dressed for work, like I normally did.  However, this day was different.  As I bent over to put on my socks, I fell to the ground with excruciating back pain.  I could barely move.  I tried crawling along the floor to find my cell phone.  I called my roommate who lived upstairs as I lived in the basement.  Needless to say, that was my first experience with a chiropractor.  … [Read more...]

Going to Work

After my college experience in New York, I began working full time in Michigan.  I still hadn’t completed my degree, so I continued going to school in the evenings and on weekends.  During those years, I felt stressed and did not manage it well.  I have a Type A personality and also have an ever so slight perfectionist trait in me.  There is nothing wrong with having drive and passion.  Those are great characteristics.  However, when you allow it to put such a … [Read more...]
