In my early and mid 20s, I had the privilege of going on a couple of missions trips to Jamaica and Mexico. While I enjoyed visiting new countries, the trips took a little toll on me. At the time, I thought nothing of it, but as I look back, I wonder if things I encountered on the trips added to my health problems.
Near the end of my trip to Jamaica, I had major stomach issues. Stomach issues like I had never had before that, nor have ever had since. I didn’t know how I was going to make it on the plane to return home. Let’s just say, I had to be near a bathroom at all times! Now a days, doctors say I have digestion issues. Maybe after the Jamaica trip I should have checked into the possibility of a parasite, but I never did.
A couple of years after visiting Jamaica, I traveled to Mexico. For a couple of the days while we were there, we traveled into the mountains about 4 hours from the main city. We visited an orphanage. I have never before nor since stayed in as bad of a place as this. It was hard to believe the kids were living like this. At the time, it was also hard to believe that we were going to spend a night with them. The conditions were so horrendous that I can’t even begin to describe.
