Should You Eat Organic Food?

Organic FoodAs summertime is in full swing, it is great to take advantage of all of the fresh fruits and vegetables!  However, it begs the question – when shopping, should you choose to buy organic food?  Yes, whenever possible, try to buy organic.

Why Should You Buy Organic?

There are many good reasons to buy organic.  I have listed a few below.  However, there are many more reasons that I did not list.

  • Organic food isn't treated with insecticides, herbicides, fungicides and other chemicals
  • Organic food isn't genetically modified
  • Buying organic helps to protect the environment – it keeps the soil and water supply free of pesticides and chemicals
  • To support local farmers – be sure to check out your local farmers market!

If you are unable to buy organic, check out The Shopper's Guide to Pesticides in Produce list of the Dirty Dozen and the Clean 15.  It will serve as a guide as you shop.  It helps you determine which fruits and vegetables have the most pesticide residues on them.

Organic Meat and Dairy Products

In addition to fruits and vegetables, you should choose organic meat and dairy products.  Today, there are many examples of problems with meat products – pink slim, ammonia being added, mad cow disease, and the list could go on.  Be sure to choose your food wisely.

Today's farmers give their animals antibiotics and added hormones.  They also feed them GMO grain along with other items they should not eat.  Keep in mind, what goes into an animal eventually makes it into you once you eat it.

It’s best to choose organic and greenfed for the sake of your health.  As a wise person once said, "pay a farmer now, or pay a doctor down the road."
