One side effect of multiple chemical sensitivity is less toleration of EMFs. After using my laptop, my throat starts feeling uncomfortable – almost like a burning feeling. I currently have an external keyboard and monitor, but I still experience the problem quite often.
What are EMFs?
EMF stands for ElectroMagnetic Field. This low-frequency “non-ionizing” radiation is an area of energy that can surround and be emitted by any electrical device, such as: appliances, power lines, electrical wiring, computers, cell phones, microwaves, TVs, etc. The field is strongest near the source and lessens as you move away from it.
Are There Health Risks Associated with EMFs?
There have been numerous studies associated with EMF exposure and biological effects.
The National Cancer Institute states, "A study in 1979 pointed to a possible association between living near electric power lines and childhood leukemia. Among more recent studies, findings have been mixed."
According to EMFCenter.com, "Some studies suggest that EMFs may be linked to a variety of health problems including leukemia, lymphoma, brain and nervous system cancers, melanoma, breast cancer, miscarriage, birth defects, Alzheimer’s disease, Lou Gehrig’s disease, depression and suicide. Anecdotally, EMFs have been associated with symptoms such as nausea, headache, fatigue, anxiety, dizziness, mental confusion, memory loss, sleep disturbance, itchy or burning skin sensations, and skin rashes."
I have visited various websites which say there are health risks and those which say there are not. I have listed some sites below for you to do your own research. Speaking from personal experience, I believe there are health related side effects due to EMFs and would suggest taking precautions so that you are not exposed to excessive amounts.
