Today was the first day in about 8 years that I worked in a corporate office setting. I left corporate over 8 years ago to help my husband with our business. Then, due to my health and having Multiple Chemical Sensitivity, there was no way I could have even fathomed working in an office environment. We worked out of an office with our business, but we had to visit many different offices before we could find one that I could tolerate.
Fortunately, my MCS symptoms are better (not 100%, but better) and I am able to tolerate more than I once could. I have to tell you, I was leery about signing up to do temp jobs, but since we have moved to a new area, I wanted to meet people and also earn extra money to do some projects around our home. I figure this will be a good test for me.
Has the Business Environment Changed Over the Past 8 Years?
It felt a little strange walking around an office today. Things have changed in business and things have definitely changed with my health over these last 8 years. Many large offices have gone with open floor plans and people sitting in “pod” groups instead of in cubes, such as the office I’m working in. I used to like having a desk in a cube. It provided a little privacy. Sitting in pods provides absolutely no privacy. It will take a little time to get used. Fortunately, I seem to have nice podmates (is that what you call them?!?). Also, I was told to wear business casual for the job. I didn’t realize that today, business casual includes jeans. Of course, technology has been upgraded, but the dreaded office laptop that has been configured over and over again is the same slow beast.
As we toured the office, I glanced at the vending machines. Eight years ago, I would have purchased snacks and pop out of them. Today, I wouldn’t even think of doing that.
The Dreaded Toxic Air Freshener
Fortunately, I felt that I was able to tolerate the office for the most part. The bathrooms were another story. I wish that businesses would stop using toxic air fresheners and cleaners. Also, being in such close quarters, I wish that more people understood about (and wouldn’t use) toxic fragrances and hand creams. My MCS symptoms flared up one time when someone put something on. My throat actually felt like it was swelling up some.
This is one of the reasons I put together a 14-day program to help you minimize toxins in your home. Products that are mentioned during the program could apply to an office environment.
I’m exhausted and today was only a half day! We’ll see how I do in the office for a whole day tomorrow.
