Do You Have a Toxic Home Environment? Take the Quiz

Do you have a toxic home environment? Even though family members can be toxic, I’m not talking about toxic relationships. I’m referring to a toxic home, as in the number of toxic chemicals you have in your home.

Toxic chemicals can unknowingly be brought into your home in a variety of ways. Each room of your home can contain many products which can off-gas harmful chemicals. These chemicals can ultimately impact your health.

Commercial Air Fresheners Create a Toxic Home Environment

For example, commercial air fresheners seem as if they should be harmless. After all, they’re created to freshen indoor air. Some air fresheners cover up unpleasant odors, while others claim to remove the bad odor. However, what chemicals are they using in air fresheners to achieve their results?

Actually, the one ingredient labeled as ‘fragrance’ can contain numerous chemicals to create that perfect scent.

For instance, if you use a plugin air freshener, you’re spuing chemicals into your home 24/7. If you have scented candles throughout your home, you’re breathing in those chemical fragrances all day long.

What is Synthetic Fragrance?

Fragrance is defined by the FDA as “a combination of chemicals that gives each perfume or cologne (including those used in other products) its distinct scent. Fragrance ingredients may be derived from petroleum or natural raw materials.”

The law does not require FDA approval before fragrances go on the market.

Manufacturers do not have to reveal the ingredients that comprise the “fragrance.” They are protected as trade secrets.

Additionally, the chemicals in fragrance are not tested for safety. In fact, only a fraction of the 6,000 classified materials used in the fragrance industry has been tested and evaluated by the industry’s International Research Institute for Fragrance Materials.

While the chemical makeup of the fragrances is kept secret, we do know, however, that most fragrances contain parabens and phthalates – two chemicals that are detrimental to our health.

Phthalates are added to make the scent last longer. They are also one of the problem chemicals highlighted by the President’s Cancer Panel.

Parabens are commonly used preservatives. They mimic estrogen and have been identified in breast tumors.

Phthalates and parabens are only two of the common chemicals found in fragrance. Fragrances can contain so many more chemicals.

Just stop to think of how much commercial air fresheners can contribute to a toxic home environment. You inhale these chemicals every time you’re at home.

A commercial air freshener is just one example. However, synthetic fragrances are in so many different products that we bring into our homes.

Synthetic fragrances alone can make our home a toxic environment. However, there are so many other chemicals found in other products such as flame retardants, formaldehyde, VOCs and many more which can negatively impact your home environment.

So, the question is, how toxic is your home environment? Do you want to see where you rank?

I’ve created a simple 12-question quiz for you to find out. The quiz asks you questions about areas all throughout your home.

  • Are you someone who takes the initiative and researches a product before you bring it into your home?
  • Are you someone who buys whatever smells the nicest to you no matter what it costs?
  • Are you someone who didn’t even realize there was a problem with the air freshener or laundry detergent you were using? You have never given it any thought.
  • Or are you someone who has started the process of shopping for products that have ingredients you can actually pronounce? You try to be a conscious consumer.

Take the quiz below to find out where you rank.

Whatever category you fit into, I want to help you create a healthier home environment!

For the sake of your and your family’s health, take a step back and look at what you’re using in your home. You can take your home from a toxic home environment and turn it into a healthy home!
