What is Hard Water?

So what is hard water anyway? Basically, it is the amount of dissolved calcium and magnesium in water.

Because water is a solvent, it can cause minerals to dissolve. The dissolved particles, however, do not just disappear. Rather, the water picks them up and carries them along with it. This is what causes hard water. Minerals commonly found in hard water include magnesium, calcium, and iron.

Hard water is safe to drink. However, it can become a nuisance in other areas of your life.

What Hard Water Could Be Doing to Your Home

Hard water can pose a challenge in the different areas of your home. The following are some ways in which hard water might be making your life more difficult.

The Effects of Hard Water on Plumbing

Hard water can cause the buildup of a crusty substance called scale inside your pipes, as well as your appliances that use water. Scale consists of mineral deposits that build up over time.

Scale buildup can affect the performance of hot water heaters and other appliances. A pipe that becomes clogged with scale may eventually have to be replaced due to restricted water flow.

The Impact of Hard Water on Dishes

If you wash your dishes in hard water, you may notice that they look dull and cloudy when they come out of the dishwasher. This, again, is due to the buildup of dissolved minerals that get deposited on your dishes.

A buildup of scale can also cause your dishwasher to function less efficiently.

Are Your Clothes Damaged When Washed?

Laundry detergent works less efficiently in hard water. The minerals found in hard water combine with the detergent to form a sticky substance called soap curd. Clothing washed in hard water may feel rough or stiff after laundering because the soap curds get lodged in the fabric.

Washing clothing in hard water may cause items to wear out more quickly or produce a sour smell. If hard water contains iron, clothes may actually become stained with rust during laundering.

The Effects of Hard Water on Hair

Shampoos and cleansers can also interact with hard water to form soap curd. This can leave a sticky residue on your skin that can sometimes cause irritation.

Additionally, hard water can make it difficult to rinse your hair completely after shampooing it. As a result, it may become more difficult to manage and look lifeless and dull.

With hard water, you may also see the buildup of soap scum and calcium deposits on your bathroom fixtures, including your sink, faucets, bathtub, shower wall, etc. This can be very difficult to remove. Even where it is possible, it may take a lot of time.

Water Softeners Can Help

Hard water is not overtly dangerous, but that does not mean that it is beneficial. Fortunately, it is not necessarily something that you have to learn to live with. Hard water can be treated by water softener companies Pittsburgh. Say goodbye to cloudy dishes and difficult hair when you get rid of the taxing effects of hard water in your home!
