My husband, and some friends and I recently visited a new restaurant in Troy, Michigan called Renee’s Gourmet Pizzeria. What’s so different about Renee’s Gourmet Pizzeria? You will notice it as soon as you step up to the door. Signs on the door mention that you cannot bring any food, or snacks into the restaurant. It is a restaurant that is completely gluten free and nut free! No need to worry about cross contamination, or if you will even encounter these ingredients. You won’t find them in this restaurant!
Why Was Renee’s Gourmet Pizzeria Founded?
Renee’s Gourmet Pizzeria was created in honor of the owner’s teenage daughter Renee. Like so many today, she has Celiac Disease. She also has Eosinophilic Esophagitis. Knowing how difficult it is for people who have these health issues to eat out, they established this restaurant.
The restaurant serves pizza, calzones, soups, salads, chicken, and some appetizers and desserts. They also offer various cheese options – even a Vegan cheese alternative. They offer carry out, delivery, or dine in.
If you enjoy thin crust pizza, you will enjoy this gluten free pizza!
Food Allergies and Celiac Disease are on the Rise
I give the owner’s a lot of credit for opening a restaurant like this. At the same time, I hate that this has to be an option that is offered. Food allergies and digestive problems continue to rise. Today, an estimated 1 in 133 Americans have Celiac disease. It is estimated that 15 million Americans have food allergies which includes 1 in 13 children.
I have developed many food allergies over the past few years. Personally, I don’t think it’s a strange coincidence that food allergies are on the rise when you look at the ingredients in our food and how the food is grown. The food we eat today is not the same as what our grandparents ate. The amount of pesticides and herbicides along with the foods that are genetically modified are all toxic to our bodies.
That being said, in addition to offering only gluten free and nut free options (which are great), it would be my wish that one day Renee’s Gourmet Pizzeria would also consider using organic and non-GMO ingredients. This is a restaurant I would recommend trying if you suffer from food allergies; however, since the ingredients are not organic and non-GMO, I would hold off on eating there on a regular basis.
