Do You Know GMOs? Check Out These Non GMO Resources

Do you know what Non GMO is? Jimmy Kimmel shared a clip on his show about GMOs. He asked consumers at a Farmer’s Market in Los Angeles what a GMO is. People seemed to know that they shouldn’t buy food with GMOs, but they didn’t exactly know why, or even what the acronym GMO stood for.

This Isn’t Really Surprising

While this really isn’t surprising, it is a little upsetting, especially with the fact that these people were from California. California was one of the first states that originally proposed a vote on labeling genetically modified food.

While I’ve seen an increased awareness of GMOs over the past couple of years, there is still a huge need to get the word out about what’s going on with our food.

Truth be told – if I hadn’t encountered problems with my health and began doing my own research, I wouldn’t have known much about GMOs and wouldn’t even look for non-GMO food. I’m sure I would have continued to go about each day eating foods with GMOs like I had done for so many years before, without much question. However, once I began doing research about the food I was eating, I wanted to learn more, and the more I learned, the more I couldn’t believe what was going on. I was also disgusted that I had been hoodwinked about GMOs for many years. Now, I am passionate about GMOs and try to always avoid them.

What is a GMO?

GMO stands for Genetically Modified Organism. According to the Institute of Responsible Technology, “GMO is the result of a laboratory process where genes from the DNA of one species are extracted and artificially forced into the genes of an unrelated plant or animal.” GMOs are created to produce a toxin which kills pests and to be resistant to herbicides.
