Living with Mold Illness and the Mysterious Symptoms of Mold Exposure

Are you experiences symptoms of mold exposure? According to Dr. Mercola, “Mold illness may be the most prominent health problem physicians are missing today — a “hidden” pandemic that’s sweeping the nation.” Millions are suffering from mysterious illnesses with a variety of symptoms which make it difficult for doctors to properly diagnosis.

Symptoms of mold exposure

Suzanne Somers is the author of a new book called TOX-SICK: From Toxic to Not Sick. Suzanne explains, “Today, we’re trying to address diseases that were more or less unheard of, or exceedingly rare, a century ago or less. And even those living a seemingly “clean” life can be dramatically affected; the toxic load is just that great.” Over the years, Suzanne has done a ton to regain her health, but despite doing some of the things which should maintain optimal health such as eating organic food, getting enough solid sleep and exercising, she has struggled with health issues stemming from toxic overload. Oh, how I can relate!

Mold Toxins are More Toxic Than Pesticides and Heavy Metals

Mold is one of those things that is toxic. Molds actually create mycotoxins. According to Dr. Mercola, “when mold dies, the cells’ walls desiccate and break apart into little fragments. The fragments carry the toxins upon them, and when inhaled, they’re absorbed into your body.” These toxins can change how you feel, think, and even how long you live as they can get into many areas of our bodies.

Dr. Ritchie Shoemaker has stated that “mold toxins are even more toxic than pesticides and heavy metals and affect a greater number of body systems.”

Why are molds more prevalent and aggressive?

According to Dr. Mercola’s article, “since the 1970s, the molds in our environment have become much more aggressive due to the widespread use of a fungicide called Benomyl,1,2 through a process similar to the creation of superbugs by overuse of antibiotics. Just as with food crops, a few types of dangerous mold were selectively allowed to grow unchecked, so we’re exposed to more of these dangerous fungi now than at any other time in history, as a direct result of these chemical fungicides.”

Most Every House Has Mold

From what I have been told and have researched unless you have incredible ventilation and air filtration, almost every house will have some mold. Mold spores are outside and can blow in when the windows are open. Mold grows in poorly ventilated spaces and when there’s water or dampness. Unfortunately, our previous house had mold in our attic due to improper ventilation. We also had some mold in the basement which was near our sump pump. Neither were unusual situations.

Not everyone is affected by mold the same way. According to Dr. Mercola, “25 to 28 percent of people are genetic “canaries in the coal mine” for experiencing severe mold reactions.” I happen to be one of those 28 percent. Fortunately, my husband isn’t one of those people as mold didn’t do the damage to him that it did to me.

While living in our house, I came to realize that I am not only extremely sensitive to mold, but it made me severely sick. Today, I believe that my immune system was already compromised before the addition of the mold in my body. It was probably a year after moving into our house that I started getting unexplainable health systems. Little did I know at the time that it was toxins, including mold wreaking havoc on my body. Like Suzanne Sommers, I had many strange symptoms cropping up, but didn’t connect it to toxins or the mold in our house. No one wants to think that their house is making them sick.

Symptoms of Mold Exposure Leading to Mold Illness

I am living proof of what toxins, including mold, can do to someone. There are a wide variety of symptoms of mold exposure. Some of my symptoms were:

  • racing heart rate
  • tingling tongue
  • lips and legs
  • stomach bloating
  • swelling in the ears and chest
  • weight loss
  • hormone disruption

I also had many additional symptoms from Multiple Chemical Sensitivity, which in my instance, I believe was brought on from mold exposure and an impaired immune system.

If you are experiencing a variety of symptoms that are stumping your doctor, I encourage you to research mold. It may be your missing link.
