How to Make DIY Skincare Products with Plants You Can Grow at Home

These days, harmful chemicals are everywhere. In our foods, toiletries, cleaning products, and even beverages. These chemicals find their way into our bloodstream day after day and may end up causing debilitating ailments in the future that we would rather do without. It’s time to stay away from products with chemicals and go the natural route.

Are Your Skincare Products Really Safe?

Nature has many solutions we can use in place of the commercial products we buy that are packed with chemicals. An excellent place to start is in skincare.

The skin is the largest organ of the body. Anything you put on it will find its way to the smallest cell in your body. As you will see here, many of the beauty products in the market are full of harmful chemicals. These toxic ingredients may end up making us sick in the future. Why risk it?

Even when skin products have labels claiming they are chemical-free, you never know if it’s true. The pest control chemicals used in plants and flowers that make skincare items are present in their essence too. So even if a beauty company doesn’t use harmful chemicals in its products, if the raw materials are not purely organic, that product could be dangerous too.

To avoid all this, why not make your own skincare products? You can do this by using plants from your home garden. There are many plants that you can grow to take care of your skin. Some good examples are Lavender, Roses, and Aloe vera plants.

Sweet-Smelling Lavender

lavender

Many people grow lavender in their backyards, window boxes, and patio gardens. The main reason for this is its sweet-smelling properties. Some also use it to ward off pests. Lavender is also great for the skin. You can use it to make lavender water, skin cream, essential oil, or soap.

How to Make Lavender Infused Oil

To dry lavender flowers, cut a bunch, tie them together, and hang them upside down for a few days. Once the flowers are dry, use them for your beauty recipe.

To make lavender-infused oil, soak some dried lavender flowers in your favorite carrier oil such as olive oil, sunflower oil, or sweet almond oil. The soothing properties of the flowers will infuse the oil, and you can use it to treat a flaky scalp, as a massage oil, or to soothe insect bites.

You can also use Lavender infused oil as a face and skin moisturizer. It has antibacterial properties, is soothing on the skin, and smells fantastic.

Beautiful Rose Flowers

Roses are the other beautiful, fragrant flowers you can use in DIY skin care products. You can make your own rose water, rose oil, or rose petal face masks easily.

How to Make Rose Water

To make rose water, you need some dried rose petals. Pick rose petals from your garden in the morning when they are most fragrant and let them dry over a few days.

Once the rose petals are dry, pour them into a saucepan of distilled water, cover, and simmer over low heat. Let the liquid simmer until the color of the petals fades completely, then turn off the heat and leave the water to cool.

Lastly, strain the petals out, pour the rose water into an airtight container, and you have some homemade rose water you can store in your fridge for a few days.

You can use homemade rose water as a facial toner as it has astringent properties that tighten pores. Just apply the cool rose water all over your face using a cotton ball every time you cleanse your skin.

How to Make a Rose Petal Face Mask

You can also make a rose petal face mask for blemishes.

Take a few fresh rose petals, mash them, and mix them with sandalwood powder, honey, and some rosewater.

Apply this rose petal anti-blemish mask on your face for 10 minutes and rinse it off with cold water for smoother and softer skin.

Powerful Aloe Vera

Spiky Aloe Vera is found in many gardens. It is almost always used as an ornamental plant when it can be used as raw material for skincare products. A simple skincare solution to make from your Aloe Vera is the gel.

Aloe Vera gel can be used as a skin mask to fight inflammation, soothe insect bites and sunburn, or clear acne. It also makes a great hair conditioner and is an excellent solution for itchy scalp. You only need to apply the Aloe Vera gel on clean skin or hair then rinse it out to benefit from its soothing and conditioning properties.

How to Make Aloe Vera Gel

To make Aloe Vera gel, cut off a thick fresh leaf from the base of the plant. Let it stand upright in a bowl to get rid of the skin-irritating yellow resin that drains out of it when it is cut.

Once the resin drains off completely, wash the leaf and then use a vegetable peeler to slice off the outer skin thinly. You will find a thick strip of gel-like material underneath.

Scrap out the gel, mash or blend it, then sieve it. You can then store the resulting gel in an airtight container in your fridge and use it for up to a week for your beauty needs.

Safe DIY Skincare Products with Plants

These are three plants you can grow at home and use in DIY skin care products. To keep it safe, avoid using any chemicals on them and always use organic solutions for pest control and fertilization. That way, you will have a reliable supply of safe raw materials for your organic homemade skincare solutions.
