I recently attended a meeting about Smart Meters in Michigan. Our utility companies have been installing smart meters over the past few years. Some are still being installed. I’m thankful to the speaker, David Sheldon, and to Valerie and Don who organized the event. It’s important to make everyone aware of smart meters, not only from a privacy concern, but also a health one.
What is a Smart Meter?
“Smart Meters are wireless, digital meters that transmit electricity and gas use to DTE using radio-frequency communication.” The electrical and magnetic fields they produce can be harmful to our health.
Smart Meters transmit pulses of wireless radiation thousands of times per day.
Why Utility Companies are Installing Smart Meters?
Of course, there is a cost factor involved. By digitizing the meters, companies are saving on the cost of physical meter readers. They also don’t have to estimate bills as these meters increase accuracy.
They are hoping that these meters will make people more aware of when and how much electricity they are using with hopes for more conservation.
Companies will now have the ability to turn off your utilities remotely if you haven’t paid your bill.
One positive thing about the meters is that they will automatically notify the utility of power outages so repairs can happen faster.
What are the Health Implications?
Smart Meters expose us to constant electromagnetic radiation. We cannot turn them off unlike other items which also produce EMR. Some people with certain medical conditions should not be exposed to EMR because they can interfere with their condition. (i.e. people with pace makers, metal implants, seizures).
Electromagnetic radiation can disrupt our blood-brain barrier, nerve transmission, cell reproduction, and damages DNA. The EMR can cause symptoms of insomnia, heart palpitations, headaches, anxiety and memory problems.
In fact, the WHO/International Agency classified radiofrequency electromagnetic fields as possibly carcinogenic to humans.
Smart Meters are intrusive. They gather a lot of information. They are able to indicate spikes in usage throughout the day and can decipher between different pulses to understand what those spikes are associated with. They can track items such as when you use your appliances, how long you use them, and what your patterns of sleep and wakefulness are. This data can then be shared with other companies.
Also, being a digital platform, this information is more vulnerable to hackers.
This invasion of privacy is a concern for many.

Smart Meter Resources
There are groups trying to spread awareness about Smart Meters. I encourage you to do your own research within your own city regarding Smart Meters and decide for yourself if they are worth having.
