How to Organize a Sustainable Celebratory Event

Events can be wasteful, and they can have much more of an impact on the environment than you might imagine. Facilities can be misused, and depending on where the event is held, physical waste can have a direct effect on the local eco-system, such as outside events near bodies of water, for instance. Misuse of energy is another major issue with events, with very few relying on sustainable sources. But there are plenty of ways to limit the carbon footprint and waste generated by an event if you plan carefully. Here’s how you can do it.

Use the Right Sanitary Options

If you’re going to need restrooms for an outdoor event, porta-potties are the perfect option. There are tons of reasons why these are great for the environment. For one, they do not require as much water. However, not having enough porta-potties could mean that some people may choose to relieve themselves on the site. Human waste contains all sorts of microorganisms that could end up containing nearby bodies of water. This is why you must have enough porta-potties for everyone present. If you want to know how many you should get, wasteawaysystems.com has an informative article that will allow you to calculate the number accurately.

Choose the Venue Wisely

If you intend to hold the event in a venue, then you have to choose the right one. You want to look for LEED certification. Most sustainable venues will be proud to display this on their website. State-owned facilities that have been built recently are more likely to be energy efficient.

Think About Food Waste

You also don’t want to waste food. When you do, all the energy that went into carrying and preparing it also goes to waste. So, instead of serving food on large plates and having people throw half in the trash, serve it on smaller plates and replenish them as they wish. Also, try to keep a close tab on the number of attendees and only produce enough food for them. If waste is inevitable, consider giving away anything that’s left that can be salvaged and still safe for consumption to a local food bank or shelter.

Stay Away from Single-Use Items

Single-use items will add to waste. This is why you must take inventory of all the items you will be using at the event. If you can, try to use real cutlery and plates. They might cost a little more, but it will be worth it if it’s for a small or medium event. Things like straws aren’t necessary either. The same goes for plastic water bottles when you can serve water from the tap and use pitchers and dispensers. If you’re going to be using disposables, look for biodegradable or compostable options.

As you can see, organizing a sustainable celebratory event doesn’t have to be difficult. The most important thing is to be mindful of waste and do everything in your power to limit it at every level.
