5 Things Women Are Doing To Relieve Stress That May Not Be Healthy

Due to life’s continuous hurdles, you will tend to find yourself in the pits of stress many times. Health issues, financial hurdles, relationships, marriage arguments, and work problems are just but a few things that can lead to stress.

On coping with stress, people and especially women handle it differently. People might indulge in unhealthy stress relief activities which end up causing them further problems.

Below are a few unhealthy things women get to do as a way of relieving their stress.

Unhealthy Ways to Relieve Stress

1. Excessive Alcohol Drinking

Many have come to believe that alcohol is the best thing to relieve stress and make their problems vanish. But, this is not the case.

Generally, alcohol is classified as a depressant, meaning it has the ability to relieve stress by calming the brain and the nervous system. The problem comes in when you take it excessively.

Women and alcohol studies have shown that excessive alcohol will cause depression, anxiety disorders, and poor organ functioning among others.

Instead of drinking alcohol, you can try to relieve stress by engaging in physical activities such as workouts to help calm your mind and lower your stress levels.

2. Smoking

Just like alcohol, smoking also is considered a stress reliever as it helps fight off anxiety, and stressful scenarios. But, this activity is very unhealthy and dangerous.

The effects of smoking have been well documented in several research studies. Dry mouth, chest problems, lack of proper sleep, irritability and cancers among others are just a few negative problems caused by smoking.

So, next time you are feeling stressed, just find a healthy distraction to keep you from smoking.

Pregnancy can also cause you stressful moments. Quit smoking in order to protect your unborn baby from birth-related complications.

3. Stress Eating

Eating food has been shown to have a direct link with stress reduction. People will always find some distraction from food and that is why you will find many indulging in their favorite meals when stressed.

Eating is not bad, but excessive and uncontrolled eating is harmful. Women under stress may tend to eat as a way of relieving stress, but most end up overeating. The end result will be an excessive bodyweight that leads to more far-reaching medical complications.

On the other hand, lack of eating can worsen your stress levels due to body sugar imbalances. Eat a balanced diet and correct foods.

4. Bottling Things Up

Women can sometimes ignore the underlying factors that bring about stress. In most cases, they bottle things up and assume that all is well, but is not.

Women deal with stress differently, some talk about it, while others keep it to themselves. Not sharing your stressful moments is very unhealthy. Ignoring the underlying factors will not fix anything.

Learn to talk about your problems. Share them with your boyfriend or spouse, your trusted friends, and family so that they can help you deal with it. Speak things out and do not be afraid to seek help when you need it.

5. Spending Recklessly

Most women love to go shopping every now and again. Shopping is not a bad thing, but compulsive spending is.

Some women can be so stressed to a point that they end up using shopping as a way of relieving stress. That behavior can lead to engaging in a shopping spree that you later realize that the items you have bought are not even necessary.

Healthier Way to Relieve Stress

Next time you are stressed, try going for a stroll in the park or the forest, meditate and calm your mind.

Studies have shown that a 15-30 minutes meditation or walk in nature regularly will help reduce your stress level drastically.
