I have heard people talk about GMO’s, but I never understood what it really meant. I did some research on it and found it unconscionable that this is happening to our food. No wonder so many people have digestive issues – this is just another reason! Humans were not meant to eat this way!
GMO Definition
GMO stands for Genetically Modified Organism. According to the Institute of Responsible Technology, “GMO is the result of a laboratory process where genes from the DNA of one species are extracted and artificially forced into the genes of an unrelated plant or animal.”
According to Green Living Ideas, “GMO food is produced for only two reasons:
- To produce a toxin, Bt, that kills pests;
- To be resistant to herbicide, such as Monsanto’s RoundUp.
The compounds produced by these novel genes are harmful to the human body as well. Bt is an anti-microbial, so it can destroy beneficial bacteria in your digestive system.”
GMO’s were introduced into the food supply in the mid 1990s. Today, GMOs are found in many foods. Over 80% of corn and soy are genetically modified in the US. It can be difficult to avoid GMO food because it’s typically not labeled. The FDA does not require food to be labeled as GMO.
