Polyester in Tights and Socks – Are There Better Options?

As a child, I would dress up for special occasions such as going to church, parties or attending some school activities. I would pick out a dress to wear and match it with colored tights or knee-highs. As I got older, the tights changed to nylons. I didn’t necessarily mind wearing tights, although, I didn’t like the confining feeling in them. However, when it came to nylons, I despised wearing them. I didn’t like being confined in them, but I also hated the feeling of nylon against my skin.

This is a sponsored post by Chrissy’s Knee High Socks. The opinions expressed in this article are mine.

As years went on and I developed Multiple Chemical Sensitivity, I realized that it wasn’t just me disliking the feeling of nylon, but it was the chemicals that made up the fabric that I was having adverse reactions to.

One common ingredient that can be found in items such as tights and socks is polyester. You can also find polyester in many other pieces of clothing.

Let’s take a closer look at what polyester is made of and then look at better options for tights.

What is Polyester?

Polyester is a soft, wrinkle-free synthetic fabric that is also flame retardant. It is resistant to stretching and shrinking which makes it a popular choice in tights and socks. It is also mildew resistant and UV resistant. However, with those favorable qualities, it can do more harm than good.

What is Polyester Made Of?

First off, polyester is a plastic. It’s no wonder I get reactions from wearing it!

Polyester was discovered in the 1930s in a DuPont lab. There are different versions of polyester. The most popular is PET (polyethylene terephthalate). PET is derived from crude oil.

Polyesters are defined as “long-chain polymers chemically composed of at least 85 percent by weight of an ester and a di-hydric alcohol and a terephthalic acid.”

How Is Polyester Made?

Polyester is made into fibers by heating the plastic and forcing it through spinnerets into fibers. This process is called melt spun. The fibers are then stretched and combined into yarn. From there, it is weaved into polyester fabrics.

Is Polyester Eco-Friendly?

Polyester is not eco-friendly. It is a “synthetic petroleum-based fiber and is therefore made from a carbon-intensive non-renewable resource.”

It is also non-biodegradable and can persist in the eco-system.

“Polyester requires more than double the energy of conventional cotton to produce. The production of polyester uses harmful chemicals, including carcinogens, and if emitted to water and air untreated, can cause significant environmental damage.”

The chemicals in polyester tights and clothing contain toxins like formaldehyde and flame retardants. Your skin can absorb these toxins while wearing tights that contain them. Polyester fibers aren’t as breathable and can restrict your skin from releasing toxins.

Long Thigh High Socks

As I previously mentioned, a couple of the things I don’t like about tights and nylons is that they are confining and they can be made with polyester. Fortunately, there is a better option than wearing polyester confining tights – long thigh high socks made with cotton.

Natural cotton is a more breathable fabric and it’s hypoallergenic. When it comes to eco-friendliness, cotton is biodegradable and more sustainable.

Chrissy’s Knee High Socks is a business that provides long thigh high socks that are 80% cotton and made in the USA. Chrissy’s abides by a fur-free policy. Their socks are manufactured using materials sourced from carefully selected suppliers in order to ensure compliance with their animal-friendly policy.

Long Thigh High Socks Are Comfortable

Thigh-high socks are the perfect footwear choice when you’re looking to cover a bit more skin than with a pair of knee highs, but don’t want to wear full tights.

Some memories I have back when I use to wear tights and nylons is the elastic being uncomfortable around my waist. Another memory is when my nylons would start creeping down – the whole area at the top would be awkward to pull up and adjust all of the time. Yikes! Then there were the snags and runs that would happen if you accidentally caught your nylons on something. None of those are good memories.

Long thigh-high socks solve those problems. No elastic band around my waist and less sagging down. They’re tough and less likely to snag. They are also less confining and more comfortable.

Long thigh high socks are not only comfortable to wear, but they are also stylish, sporty and warm. They are great for many occasions. They can be dressed up or dressed down depending on your choice of the socks’ color and pattern.

So if you are looking for an option other than wearing nylons or tights, look into wearing long thigh-high socks without polyester. Your skin will thank you!
